Synopsis:
EMVIN CREMONA (1919-1987) stands out as a highly gifted creative artist who excelled as a painter, designer and teacher. His prolific career includes paintings in Maltese churches, philatelic designs and pioneering abstract experimental works. He demonstrated an innovative spirit in all these areas. His abstract works in ink on paper and the broken glass series remain to date some of the most outstanding abstract achievements. In this one hundredth anniversary from his birth, Cremona is remembered as an artist who truly assimilated the spirit of the modernist revolution for introducing a wide public to new forms of expression and helping to reshape the aesthetic sensibility of his nation. Prof. Joseph Paul Cassar will also link Cremona with Victor Pasmore's presence in Malta and will discuss some new findings from his research.
Prof. Joseph Paul Cassar is an art historian who primarily focuses on twentieth-century Maltese art, a subject on which he has published extensively. Having previously lectured at the University of Malta, he currently lectures at several universities in the United States.
