The quest to understand the Universe has led to many unexpected results and numerous Nobel prizes over the years. How was the Universe born out of the big bang? How and why does the Universe appear to not only be expanding, but to be expanding at an accelerating rate? What will happen to the Universe in the future?
Cosmology@Malta 2019 will host acclaimed international speakers, Prof. Mariam Bouhmadi Lopez (University of Bilbao, Spain) and Prof. Emmanuel Saridakis (National Technical University of Athens, Greece & Baylor University, USA) to discuss the scientific community’s current explanations of how the Universe works and the outstanding problems which are being tackled by researchers in the cosmology community today.
Understanding the Universe is one of the greatest mysteries that science holds and has allured researchers and society for many centuries. However, cosmology is at a turning point, with recent missions by the European Space Agency (ESA) showing a growing mismatch between our theories and what the most accurate measurements of the Universe show us.
In March Malta will host one of the European conferences that will tackle some of these open problems in cosmology. Some of the most fundamental questions concerning gravity and how new theories of gravity may resolve some of these outstanding problems in our picture of the Universe. Ultimately, our goal is to explain what we see happening for distant stars and galaxies and link that with our picture of the cosmos.
