Although the name focuses on muscles and tendons, one can easily understand how the affected system is the entire physical system. The main objective is the strengthening of the energy aspect. On the origins of this millennial sequence the legends are various: the most famous tradition attributes the merit to Bodhidharma who, by visiting a Shaolin monastery and finding the debilitated monks, transmitted to them this portentous remedy. Numerous martial arts scholars, however, based on the analysis of documentation and the inconsistencies found in the textual introductions, do not consider this reliable version. There are also those who recognise in the Yi Jin Jing the fusion of Baduanjin (eight pieces of Brocade) and Shi Ba Luohan Shou, a purely martial technique.
