St Monica Choir and tenor Nicholas Mulroy in Concert
Description:
The St Monica Choir will be teaming up with international British tenor Nicholas Mulroy to present a journey of 300 years through the world of sacred music. This event is being organised as an on-going investment the choir is making in its choristers since this concert is part of a 3-day master class programme for the choristers with the professional tenor and specialist in the field. The choir will be showcasing new techniques learnt through the exploration of the sacred repertoire ranging from Bach and Handel to contemporary compositions, and also including Maltese composers. The audience will also have the opportunity to listen to the brilliant Nicholas Mulroy who will be singing with the choir as well as in some solo pieces. He will be taking on a double role as choir conductor too! The St Monica Choir is one of the oldest and most prestigious choirs in Malta having celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014 and which has gone from strength to strength performing both in Malta and overseas with various acclaimed conductors. The choir has offered the Maltese public concerts of high calibre; Bach's St Matthew Passion and Christmas Oratorio, Orff's Carmina Burana, Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, Jenkin's The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace and last November Verdi's Requiem under the direction of Mro Michael Laus with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. Nicholas Mulroy is internationally renowned in the field of early music especially, and is in constant demand both in the UK and further afield in a wide range of concert, recital and opera engagements. He has sung at many of the world’s great concert halls: the Sydney Opera House, Boston Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, Berlin Philharmonie and the Salzburg Festival with today’s most important conductors. We have had the pleasure to hear him thanks to the Valletta International Baroque Festival here in Malta in performances of Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s St John Passion and Mass in B minor and Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610. Entrance to the concert is free of charge and no booking is required.
